We offer various glazing options at Throw. Below is a quick overview of each one and what you can expect when using them.

All glazes are fired to cone 6. Outside glazes are also welcome but must be within our cone 6 firing range. Results can vary based on factors like application, firing atmosphere, clay body, and more.

All glazes we offer are completely food safe and dishwasher safe and can withstand high temperatures for baking. Members have full access to all studio glazes. One time classes have the choice to use any of our Stroke & Coat glazes.

Stroke & Coat Glazes

Stroke & Coat glazes are made by Mayco and can be applied when a pot is fresh off the wheel, in its greenware stage, or after it has been bisque fired. Both stages will give you the same shiny result.

We suggest applying three thin coats of color for the best results, allowing each coat to dry between applications.

When applied at the greenware stage, pieces will be placed on our single fire shelves and undergo one single firing before coming out completely finished. Instead of the usual bisque firing followed by a glaze firing, both steps are completed in one firing. Hence the title “single fire.”

Anything with Stroke & Coat applied to it will come out shiny, much like a traditional glaze. Any areas without Stroke & Coat will remain the natural color and texture of the clay body.

For daily use food items, we suggest applying glaze to the inside of the piece and anywhere food may come into contact with the clay. This helps prevent unwanted bacteria growth and improves the longevity of the piece.

Below is a list of all Stroke & Coat colors, along with a sample tile on regular B Mix clay.

  • Cotton Tail

    Cotton Tail is a bright, glossy white with excellent coverage. It creates a clean, crisp finish and is perfect for adding highlights, painting detailed designs, or layering with other Stroke & Coat colors.

    Just Froggy is a cheerful medium green with a glossy finish and solid coverage. It adds a fresh pop of color and is perfect for leaves, plants, and playful decorative designs.

  • Blue Yonder

    Best On: Decorative painting and layering

    Blue Yonder is a bright sky blue with a smooth, glossy finish. Its vibrant color makes it a great choice for decorative details and it pairs beautifully with the other Stroke & Coat colors.

  • Sun-kissed

    Sunkissed is a warm golden yellow with a bright, glossy finish. It adds cheerful color to decorative work and pairs beautifully with the other Stroke & Coat colors in our collection.

  • Hot Tamale

    Hot Tamale is a vibrant red with a glossy finish and strong color saturation. It creates eye-catching accents and is perfect for illustrations, patterns, and colorful surface decoration.

  • Tuxedo

    Tuxedo is a rich, glossy black with smooth, even coverage. It creates crisp lines and bold contrast, making it a great choice for detailed artwork, lettering, and graphic designs.

  • Clear

    Best On: Surface decoration and natural clay

    Clear creates a smooth, glossy finish while allowing the clay body or any decoration underneath to remain visible. It enhances carved details and painted designs without changing their color, making it a classic choice for functional and decorative pieces

Dip Glazes

Dip glazes can be tricky to get consistency with, given their nature. However, following the studio guidelines and practicing will help guarantee success.

An instructional video on dip glazes is attached to the wall by our glaze test tiles in the studio. All members must watch this video before using the dip glazes.

The following is a quick overview and some helpful tips when using our in studio dip glazes:

• Don’t layer glazes without testing first! Glaze combinations can react differently than expected, so always test before applying a combination to a finished piece.

• Only dip a piece for a maximum of three seconds. We can’t fire pieces if the glaze is applied too thickly.

• Wax the bottom of your piece to prevent glaze from sticking to the kiln shelf. Once your piece is fully dry, wipe the bottom clean before placing it on the glaze shelf.

• Thoroughly mix the glaze each time you use it, making sure the material settled at the bottom of the bucket gets fully mixed back into the rest of the glaze.

• Remember to clean up after yourself. No clay left behind!


Meet Our Dip Glazes

Every glaze has its own personality. Some move a lot during firing, some highlight texture, and others give a more consistent solid finish. Use the profiles below to get a better idea of what to expect from each glaze.
Keep in mind that glaze results can vary depending on application, clay body, firing atmosphere, and the form of your piece. Test tiles are always your best reference!

Rutile Green

Rutile Green is a soft seafoam green glaze with fine speckling throughout the surface. It develops warm honey colored breaks around edges where the glaze is thinner, while pooling into a richer green in carved details. The rutile and copper in the glaze create natural variation, making each firing unique while beautifully highlighting texture.

Starry Sky

Starry Sky is a deep midnight blue glaze with subtle speckling that gives it the appearance of a night sky. Cobalt and copper create its rich blue color, while titanium dioxide encourages lighter blue breaks and natural variation across the surface. Its moderate movement creates depth without becoming overly runny.

Sunshine

Sunshine is a warm buttery yellow glaze with a smooth, glossy finish. Rutile and titanium dioxide give it its soft golden color and subtle variation, while its low movement creates a clean, reliable finish. It gently highlights texture without becoming overly runny.

Breaking Dawn

Breaking Dawn is a rich oxblood red glaze with a smooth, glossy finish. Tin oxide and chrome oxide work together to create its deep burgundy color, while subtle variations in application can produce slightly lighter reds on thinner areas and edges. Its low movement creates a reliable, even finish that lets the bold color take center stage.

Clear is a transparent glossy glaze that enhances the natural beauty of the clay body or any decoration underneath. Its low movement preserves crisp details, carved designs, and underglaze work while creating a smooth, glass-like finish that works well on both decorative and functional pieces.

T Bird

T Bird is a soft satin white glaze with warm tan breaking around rims, edges, and textured areas. Small amounts of rutile and iron give it its natural warmth, while its moderate movement helps highlight carved details. On speckled clay bodies, the natural speckles remain visible through the glaze, adding extra character.
